  Let the ‘train take the strain’ the old British Rail advert said. But is it possible today? Can the modern network of lines and Train Operating Companies offer any form of competition to road transport? I felt the onus of responsibility rested on my shoulders to find out.  

The Plan

To circumnavigate the United Kingdom by rail, as cheaply and easily as possible.

                                                                      Day 1: Manchester to Inverness

                                                                        Day 2: Inverness to Glasgow  
                                                                      Day 3: Glasgow to London
                                                                      Day 4: London to Southampton
                                                                      Day 5: Southampton to Manchester
